In the early 1930's the Great Depression had began and many people across the nation were paying the consequences. There was a failure of more than 9,000 banks, and 30, 000 companies had went out of business. By 1933 more than 12 million workers in the U.S had went unemployed. Many people without jobs were going hungry and there were many that starved to death. At times there was organizations that were willing to help by hand out food to the poor. New York's YMCA was feeding around 12,000 homeless people a day. Many people could not afford to pay their mortgage and were losing their homes. Many could not move and were forced or evicted from their own homes.
Throughout the nation, homeless people were building shacks on property that was not being used or on public land. The shacks in which homeless people lived in, were made out of very thin layers of wood. The millions of homeless people all formed a community of shacks that were named Hoovervilles. Many homeless started searching for a better life and most importantly a job. There were hundreds of thousands of men, woman and children wondering around the nation hitchhiking in search for better opportunities.
